Badilisha or non?
When I picked out the current them for my blog, I had East Africa in mind. But, now that we’re returning to the other side of the continent, different terrain, do you think I should change the theme or not?
How to add your phone to Twitter so you can send updates via SMS
I have a Nokia 5000 and a Twitter account. Sometimes, I like to send a tweet while on the run but for some reason recent changes un-verified my phone number here in Tanzania. Took me about half an hour to track down how to verify it again, because the ‘Mobile’ [formerly 'Devices'] section in the Twitter settings only has instructions on how to do it using short codes from a very limited number of countries. Never fear, I found this in Twitter’s support section:
How to add your phone number to one way long codes

Want to add your phone?
Using Twitter is easy, especially if you have a phone! As of now, Twitter supports these countries: US, UK, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Canada. If you want more information, please click here.
If you are living somewhere else, you can use this number. +44 762 4801423.
Important: If you use this number, you cannot receive messages from Twitter.
Yes, we know this complicates things. The good thing is, you can still add your phone by following these steps:
- Send a text to +44 762 4801423 with the word START. If you live in Germany (+49 17 6888 50505) or Sweden (+46 737 494222) , please send START to these phone numbers
- Wait 2 minutes and then send your user name to the same number. Do not use @, your username ONLY. Example: username1. Hit send.
- Wait 2 minutes. Send your password to the same number. This is case sensitive!
- Wait 2 minutes. Finally, you can send OK to same number.
Done! You can use Twitter with your phone. Please send a “test” text and log in to Twitter via web to make sure your number is added!
Once again, you will not be able to receive texts to confirm phone activation!
If you are still having problems with this process, please send us a ticket.
Thanks!

Impeach the elbow
Some of my recent responsibilities have been to gather profile pictures of our language cluster project team for a collaborative branch poster. Those posters are displayed at conference and each office location takes one back with them. So, I gathered all the photos I could and began sending them to our communications guy, a PC guy. He replies, “The emails labeled MICP Photos 2, and MICP Photos 3 came with the photos embedded in the email, which makes things problematic. The first one is fine. You’ll have to resend the photos as attachments. How many emails did you send?” Huh? Didn’t I send them as attachments? If he had a Mac, the answer would be yes. He has a PC, so the answer is no. We worked around the problem when we examined the ‘first one’ to which his reply referred. That e-mail was different in that it included a list sent as a text file attached along with the photos. So, we used that method to get him all the poster shots he needed, but talk about going around your elbow.
Fast forward to today. Dana asked for a picture I have of her and Asher in Kenya. I send it to her. She can’t save it. Using Outlook 2007. What the crap? So, I research. Low and behold, there is some kind of ‘bug’ when sending picture-as-only-attachments e-mails from Apple Mail to a PC. Aside from the work around described above, another relatively quick one is to change the message format to Plain Text. If you have Mail set to this as default, you’ve completely wasted 3 minutes of your life by reading this post. Pole! (‘pole’ is Swahili for “sorry for ya!”) But for all of us HTMLers, guess the elbow is still in office.
P.S. Selecting this doesn’t make a difference:
… and even though I’m a Mac guy, I ain’t scared to say that Apple needs to fix this.
I’m a Twit… -ter
If you look to the right, you’ll see a new section I added to my blog called “Twitter”. If you don’t know what Twitter is, here’s a pretty good explanation on Wikipedia. This addition will now allow me to micro-blog or post frequent short updates about what’s going on in my day in Tanzania. You can follow what I twit… twitter… tweet… shoot, I don’t even know what to call it. You can follow what I write (how about that?) either here on the side of my blog or directly on twitter.
New Title
As you can see, I’ve settled on the new name for my blog… Eyes to See, Ears to Hear. I like it because it is from Scripture and it can also carry a meaning related to my work in vernacular media.
Nobody suggested this here title but Kent submitted an idea that got the ball rolling in this direction. I don’t think I would’ve thought of it without his great brain stimulation. So, Kent… me and my blog thank you. You will be receiving the from-Africa prize. Hopefully it will arrive back in the States before I’m in the mood for another name change!!!
‘Jonathan’s McBlog’ is Mcbye-bye
Not the blog itself, just the title. I thought it was a little cheezy when I first named it that but now after two and a half years, man it’s gotta change!!!
To what? I have no idea. I tried one with some Swahili words but it wasn’t floating my boat either so I had the idea to open it up to others’ suggestions. This risk won’t come without reward for you as I will send a little something (all the way from AFRICA!) to you as a prize for your suggestion being chosen by yours truly. Feel free to e-mail your entry to me, post it in a comment here, send a carrier pigeon (better be a strong one), or by any other means of communication you like. I’d like to have the blog named by March 1st.

Safari 3 vs Firefox 2 ; Color Differences

These are section screenshots from the same two websites (mccalled.com/amyboyles/ (left) & mccalled.com (right)) viewed in Safari 3 (top) and Firefox 2 (bottom) on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed any color oddities in Safari like this and if so, have you learned how to fix it? The sites show up how I want them to and how I designed them to in Firefox and have that weird color difference in Safari.
FYI – Internet Explorer 7 running on Vista lookes like Firefox 2 when it comes to colors.
Advice?
faxZERO.com is a Great Computer-to-Fax Tool

I’ve had to fax quite a few things here lately and I don’t have a fax machine. So, I searched online and found this website that will send an electronic document to any fax number in the U.S. and Canada. An example of how I used it is JAARS Clinic needed a copy of my health insurance prescription card. Not driving way out there just for that. I took a picture of it, inserted that into a Word document, and uploaded it to faxZERO. Within a few minutes I received my fax confirmation e-mail notifying me it had successfully been sent. And it was FREE! Can’t beat that.
