Healthy Seven Layer Dip
Posted in Food/Recipes by: AngelaA few years ago, I came across an article on the Food Network website about Seven Layer Dip. Who doesn’t love Seven Layer Dip with a big bag of taco chips….or better yet, taco chips with a hint of lime?!

Most Seven Layer Dips are made from refried beans (which include lots of trans-fat & partially-hydrogenated lard), lots of sour cream, full fat cheeses, and high sodium taco seasoning. Lets not forget the olives and other additives we put on top!
So, Food Network has given us a healthier alternative that is just as tasty!! A perfect recipe for Kim’s Tasty Tuesday Party over at Forever Wherever!!
- Replace the refried beans with canned beans that have been blended with a touch of EVOO.
- Drain and rinse those canned beans to decrease sodium by up to 40%!
- Instead of high calorie sour cream, use nonfat Greek yogurt. Once drained, nonfat Greek yogurt is just as rich as sour cream.
- Add lots of fresh ingredients: crispy romaine, fresh tomatoes, scallions, cilantro, & low fat cheeses.
- The avocado was left in the recipe to contribute fiber, folic acid, a creamy texture. If you would like to reduce these calories, use half the avocado or mix it with cooked/canned tomatillos.
- Instead of one big dish of the dip, try making individual bowls. Helps with consumption….maybe!
- Try baked chips or vegetables such as peppers or cucumbers.
ENJOY!
